Specialist Inpatient Services

Learning Disability Nurses who work in specialist inpatient services undertake a variety of roles and have a range of responsibilities. They support people and their family members at what can be an extremely distressing time for all concerned. The primary aim is to support a person’s recovery through person centred and holistic care. Working in a hospital setting means that nurses undertake a multitude of assessments and interventions; such as administering medication, taking physical observations and serving as the keyworker for planning and delivering care; but there is so much more to the role.

Learning Disability nurses working in these environments are skilled in forming relationships with people under sometimes difficult circumstances and they are excellent communicators. They also serve as advocates for the people they support, pioneering new approaches to lead and inform the person’s onward care, and helping them transition back to their local community.
