Primary and Acute Care
Learning Disability Nurses who work in primary and acute care play a significant role in brokering and supporting the health and wellbeing of people with a learning disability.
They generally work in Acute Hospitals and GPs surgeries, and the wider primary care sector, working in teams or sometimes as autonomous practitioners. They are well placed to raise the profile of the needs of the person with a learning disability amongst colleagues from other fields of healthcare, by leading, educating, and often dispelling myths and assumptions about how best to care for a person with a learning disability.
Many learning disability nurses working in this area provide dedicated training, ensuring they have a presence in all areas of the workplace.
They are experts in working holistically with people, their families and carers and are innovative and creative, making reasonable adjustments to transcend barriers that exist and ensure that people with a learning disability receive timely and effective care and support.
