Consultant Nurse for people with learning disabilities and autism - Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust

Hello, my name is Sue. I have been a Registered Nurse Learning Disabilities (RNLD) for 34 years’ after starting out as a support worker in a day centre. During my career I have worked in a range of different clinical, education and governance roles.

Until recently I led on the Green Light Toolkit Quality Improvement Plan within Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust (NSFT) to drive the learning disability and autism agenda forward within mental health services. For this work I was awarded Learning Disability Nurse of the Year in June 2018 at the National Learning Disability and Autism Awards.

I am active on social media and as a member of the #keephoLDNon virtual team we supported the learning disability community and nursing students through the pandemic. We made videos and held events to improve people’s wellbeing.

I cannot think of a better career! I feel passionately about encouraging people to #ChooseLDNursing as a positive career choice and am leading on a project locally to promoting learning disability nursing. As a group we work within schools, academies and access courses to encourage people to enter the profession which makes a real difference to people’s lives.
