We remain concerned about the dramatic reduction in the number of learning disability nurses employed by the NHS, and the support they receive. <image:caption>As we begin this year of international celebration for 2020 it is amazing to see the profession strengthen its commitment to us and the people we serve. On close scrutiny, the skill base of the LD nurse lies at the solution of many of the health and social care challenges facing the UK and is arguably the field that best demonstrates care across lifespan and settings as advocated in the NMC standards. Which is why we initiated this plan for Learning Disability Nursing and continue to support its development, thanks to #TeamCNO and HEE this is now firmly rooted in the way forward.</image:caption>

      <image:title>London - Tim Buck</image:title>
<image:caption>East London NHS Foundation Trust & City, University of London I initially began working with people with learning disabilities and autistic people when I left school. I was attending Art College during the week and supporting people in their own home on evenings and weekends. I loved the variety of the job and the relationships I was able to build with the people that lived there. I soon realised that I was looking forward to my support work shifts much more than college, so I left my course to work full-time in that role. I have never looked back. In 2022 I completed a master's degree in Contemporary Nursing with the University of Hertfordshire, with a focus on research, clinical & strategic leadership and change management. I have also had the opportunity to work in a senior safeguarding role. These experiences took me out of my comfort zone but allowed me to experience different ways of working and develop my skills as a clinician and a nurse leader. I now work jointly for an NHS Trust providing learning disability, mental and physical health services in community, inpatient and forensic settings and a local University. My roll, like many other consultant nurses, is to work strategically whilst focussed around the four pillars of advanced practice, although my joint role with the University allows me to focus attention on nurse education, research and workforce development. I can’t put enough emphasis on the importance of communities of practice. The role of the registered nurse in learning disabilities is ever evolving to meet the needs of the people we support. This can sometimes present a challenge, but it’s rare that there isn’t someone out there going through the same experience. I’m keen to support the development of colleagues through shared learning, supervision and supporting professional networks. It’s important to maintain a healthy work/life balance and I have an interest in music, running and cycling outside of work. I love my job, no two days are the same and there’s still lots of opportunity to use my creative skills when supporting people.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Consultant Nurse Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust I entered the NMC register as a learning disability nurse in 2003 after completing a Dip HE (Nursing) at the University of Hull. After brief employment in East Yorkshire, I moved to London to work in the specialist services for my current employer. I have since worked in various settings and progressed my career to become a ward manager and have been involved in nurse education. I am currently a Consultant Nurse whose role is to develop and lead on organisational strategies to reduce restrictive interventions. While this role covers a wide range of services, I have a particular interest in the care of individuals who have a learning disability and/or ASD. I support nurse education at pre and post-registration levels through my work with local Universities to increase awareness of learning disability, ASD. And evidence-based practices in these areas. Some of my areas of interest are research, Positive Behaviour Support and trauma informed approach. I am proud to be a learning disability nurse!</image:caption>

      <image:title>London - Steve Hardy</image:title>
<image:caption>Independent Consultant Nurse https://www.stevehardyldn.com I started socialising with children with learning disabilities when I was six or seven years old in a large home in south east London. As soon as I was 18 years old, I became a support worker in a residential home for adults with learning disabilities. A year later I was seconded to become a student learning disability nurse. Socialising and supporting people with learning disabilities has been ‘normal’ to me. I worked in a variety of settings like homes, day services, forensic and inpatient units. I am well known for my work at the Estia Centre, where I published lots of academic texts, journal articles and was editor of Advances in Mental Health and Intellectual Disabilities journal. More recently I have been greatly involved in ensuring the human rights of people with learning disabilities are met and developing a variety of platforms for people to speak up and be heard. I am very interested in supporting student nurses so please contact me through my website.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Consultant Nurse | Learning Disabilities Maudsley Hospital I first started to work with people with a learning disability when I was 16 years old - volunteering in a SEN school. I was instantly amazed by the strengths of the kids and drawn to working out different ways to communicate and find creative solutions to aid their learning and development. "I was clear that this was something that I wanted to do for a career but didn't really know where to start. By chance I came across an advert for learning disability nursing and the rest is history! "Since registering as a nurse, I have worked in specialist mental health services both inpatient and community. Latterly I have moved more into training and research and love the opportunities that my current job as consultant nurse brings. I continue to specialise in mental health but I have moved my focus to supporting colleagues who don't work in the field to improve their knowledge, skills and confidence to provide the best care that they can to people with a learning disability.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Professional Lead for Learning Disabilities, Royal College of Nursing, Chief Enablement Officer/Nurse Consultant, PBS4 I discovered learning disability nursing after a severe head injury when I was 19 years old that could have resulted in me requiring support in all aspects of my life. I always look at the support people with learning disabilities receive and ask myself “if I was in a position where I was receiving this support, would it be good enough for me?” I think this is an important question we all should ask ourselves. I qualified as a registered nurse in learning disabilities in 2002 and I have worked in community and inpatient learning disability services in the NHS and had management roles where I have developed new services. I have worked in Child and Adolescent Mental Health inpatient services and Youth Offending Teams. I have had senior positions in national social care services. I have done project work for the Department of Health exploring the needs of people with learning disabilities who come into contact with the criminal justice system. I have also worked for the Care Quality Commission. During my time in the NHS I was supported to get a Masters qualification in Positive Behaviour Support. In 2021 I was appointed as the Professional Lead for Learning Disabilities for the Royal College of Nursing. I see my key responsibilities in this role as being about ensuring learning disability nurses are heard and that the profession gets the recognition that it deserves. I am also Chief Enablement Officer/Nurse Consultant for PBS4, a not-for-profit social care provider for people with learning disabilities and complex needs. My main interests include Positive Behaviour Support, offending behaviours, profound and multiple learning disabilities, and social care. However, I am passionate about all aspects of health and social care for people with learning disabilities. I think the opportunities for learning disability nurses are endless and provide hugely rewarding career opportunities.y you tell your story online can make all the difference.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Nurse Consultant, Forensic Intellectual Disability Pathway, Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust I currently work as a Nurse Consultant in the Forensic Intellectual Disability Pathway but began my nursing career in 1990, working as a nursing assistant on a ward caring for people with a learning disability before I entered my nurse training. I qualified as a RNMH in 1993. I was quite used to spending time with people with a learning disability as my mother was a domestic assistant and then a nursing assistant at the local learning disability hospital when I was growing up, however it wasn’t until I embarked upon some volunteer work within the sports department at that hospital that I started to consider a career in learning disability nursing. Throughout my nursing career I have mainly worked within inpatient forensic learning disability services, including nine years as a ward manager. Although I enjoyed my time as a ward manager I have always preferred the clinical aspects of nursing rather than the managerial side. I first applied for the role of the Nurse Consultant, Intellectual Disability Pathway in 2013; although unsuccessful I used the positive feedback to review my future nursing career. I still decided that I wanted to pursue a senior clinical role and identified that I needed to be more aware of wider Trust and particularly community services and developments. Over the year I fulfilled a number of secondment opportunities across a range of different areas. Looking back, I believe it was these opportunities that showed me the range of services that learning disability nurses can successfully work in. Throughout this period I also completed my Masters in Mental Health Law. In 2014 I was successfully appointed as Nurse Consultant and in 2017 I gained approval to undertake the role of the Approved Clinician. I am currently Responsible Clinician for 14 patients across community and in-patient services. I am thankful that throughout my career I have worked with some fantastic learning disability nurses and other healthcare professionals who have not only supported me but provided excellent role models in providing patient centred care of the highest standards. I have also learnt so much from the many patients who have passed through our services and are now living successfully in the community. In my role as a nurse consultant there are 4 key areas: Expert clinical practice within the service for at least 60% of the post; Professional leadership and consultancy, including clinical supervision; Education, training and development of Forensic staff, and a range of other agencies, statutory and non-statutory in management and treatment services for people with intellectual disabilities who have offended or likely to offend; and Research into various aspects of service provision and service evaluation which involves service users and their families. My main aim as a nurse consultant is to continue to serve the people I work with in creating lifestyles less compatible with offending, reducing the health inequalities for people with a learning disability and to use my role in influencing and developing a dedicated nursing workforce. I would strongly recommend a career as a learning disability nurse.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Nurse Consultant: Newcastle/ Gateshead Community Team Learning Disability I always knew I wanted to be a nurse, coming from a family of nurses it was always destined to be. I left school and stepped into the world of being a student learning disability nurse in 1999. I qualified in 2002 and was successful in becoming a ‘D Grade Nurse’, then came along agenda for change and my first post was working In secure male and female forensic units supporting those patients who had come into contact with the criminal justice system and had been diagnosed with a learning disability. After being asked by friends and family if I worked in crime scenes I would explain my role as someone a nurse who plays a vital role working with and improving or maintaining a person’s physical and mental health. Reducing barriers to support them to live an independent life, supporting the person to live a quality of life they deserve As we are at the time of writing this well into celebrating over 100 years of learning disability nursing. Now twenty years on, I am honoured and privileged to be a Learning disability Nurse Consultant. I currently work in an adult community learning disability team in the North East and have been in post for around two years. The post is new and constantly under review and I am lucky enough to work in an established Multi disciplinary team. I see the care that we provide as an honour and feel fortunate to offer specialist healthcare and support to people with a learning disability and their families.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Independent Consultant Nurse Approved Clinician & Honorary Clinical Associate Professor My nursing career in learning disability nursing started when I was at a cross roads in my life, not clear about what I wanted to do. I spent most of my life with and around people with learning disability, had done some volunteer work and heard of the recruitment for nurse training. Once registered as a learning disability nurse it wasn’t long before I moved into the community and I’ve been here ever since. Even when returning for a short time into the inpatient setting, I negotiated a joint inpatient community job plan allowing me to maintain a broader role and focus on keeping people at home where possible. In my 39 year career I have worked with people with learning disability of all ages and with all types of need within the areas of physical health need; mental health need; behavioural need and forensic need. I have always had an interest in education and in the law and focussed on courses that would add to my clinical skills, which has steered my choices for personal and professional development beyond registration. Having worked with many autistic people I have deepened my knowledge of their needs and branched some of my time into the service offer for autistic people who do not have learning disability. I have taken any opportunity that has been presented, some of which have come from the many NHS reorganisations that I’ve been through. This has included secondment opportunities with Lancashire County Council; higher education partners and the Department of Health. I have established and led many learning disability nursing networks regionally and nationally and through these have the opportunity to influence national policy development and implementation. I have also led on practice innovation and influenced the development of the role of learning disability nursing. I have been a Consultant Nurse since 2002 a nurse prescriber since 2005, a DoLS Best Interest Assessor since 2008, an expert witness since 2012, an Approved Clinician since 2014 and an OPG Special Visitor since 2024. What has been great about my career is the ability in all of the positions I have had to remain in a clinical and practice role working directly with the people we serve, their families and support structures.</image:caption>

I am extremely proud of my profession and the opportunities it has given me to work alongside people who have supported me to develop, listen and learn. I have worked across an array of services enabling me to meet people of all ages in different areas of provision. Having trained in a top security hospital most of my clinical career has been spent working with people in the community. I joined Edge Hill University in 2000 initially as a lecturer/ practitioner joining full time in 2002. I returned to practice in 2015 as part of a secondment arrangement with Alder Hey Children’s hospital. <image:caption>Consultant Nurse & Associate Director of Nursing Lancashire & South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust I began working in NHS learning disability settings in 1999, and since then I’ve carried out a variety of clinical, operational and programme management roles. I qualified as a registered Learning Disability Nurse in 2004; completing a BSc (Hons) in Professional Learning Disability Studies in 2009; and later an MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice, in addition to undertaking Non-Medical Prescribing (V300). Whilst completing my MSc, myself and colleagues co-developed an autism framework of care to help staff improve their understanding of communication, sensory, person-centred, and positive behavioural approaches. As a result, I was nominated and came runner up for the North West Workforce Modernisation Hub Innovation Awards 2011, and was nominated for the Learning Disability Nursing Award at the prestigious Nurse of the Year 2013 awards, and came second in this category. In the past six years I have worked in a national role for NHS England and Improvement’s national learning disability and autism programme, my roles have included working within the ‘Improving Lives’ team, co-leading programmes such as ‘Ask, Listen, Do’, ‘STOMP-STAMP’, the ‘Care, (Education) and Treatment Review’ refresh, and latterly the national autism team. Currently I serve as Consultant Nurse for Autism and as Associate Director of Nursing within Lancashire and South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust. I clinically lead a new autism outreach team and support the development of autism pathways across the Trust. I’m also about to embark on the Approved Clinician training part-time at Northumbria University. As an extension of my role, I sit as a member of the RCN Learning Disability Forum Steering Group, and I am a co-chair of the North West Learning Disability Nurse Forum. <image:caption>Consultant Nurse in Learning Disabilities/Associate Director of Nursing I work at Lancashire and South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust. I am aligned with the Discharge Co-ordination team, working to expedite the discharge of service users in out of area placements back into the LSCFT footprint and into appropriate community services. My passion for working with people with Learning Disabilities started at an early age; I undertook voluntary work from age 14 at a local school for children with severe, multiple and profound Learning Disabilities. I worked within the school’s overnight unit, which offered respite care for 6 children each night. I had always wanted to be a nurse and subsequently decided that I wanted to be a Learning Disability Nurse. I undertook my nurse training aged 18 at Sheffield Hallam University and my first post on qualifying was at Calderstones Hospital, which was a forensic inpatient unit. I stayed at Calderstones for 19 years and in that time held various roles, including staff nurse, deputy ward manager and acting ward manager. In 2009 I had the opportunity to undertake the MSc in Advanced Practice at UCLAN, which was a great learning and development opportunity. I subsequently completed my NMP training in 2013. My role as Advanced Clinical Practitioner then included leading on the physical health care for service users at Calderstones; which included undertaking annual physical health checks, leading on immunisation and vaccination programmes and prescribing for minor physical health care needs. In 2015 I moved to Guild Lodge (LSCFT) as a ward manager within the women’s service and was consequently appointed as Matron for the inpatient Women’s Service. I came into my current post in July 2021 and am really excited to be back within learning disability services and look forward to developing into my role and making a difference in the lives of people with a Learning Disability.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Consultant Nurse Learning Disabilities Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust I trained in Norfolk as a Registered Learning Disabilities Nurse in 1988 and have worked in a variety of both community and in-patient settings. Following completion of my MSc (Mental Health in Learning Disabilities) I held a Clinical Nurse Specialist post which was developed to specifically support access to adult mental health services for people who also had a Learning Disability. Following this I held a number of Senior Nursing posts with a particular emphasis on continued improvement in the quality of service provision. Since completing the Non-Medical Prescribing qualification in 2012, I have fully embedded this into my Consultant Nurse role which I have held for the last three years. I have a particular interest in supporting the further development of these roles across Learning Disability Services and more specifically in highlighting the beneficial impact that these roles have in supporting the rationalisation of, and deprescribing of prescribed psychotropic medications. A key focus of my role is providing clinical and strategic leadership for our Health Facilitation Team across Hampshire and Southampton. Although there remains work to be done and more progress to be made, I am incredibly proud of the positive outcomes that have been achieved across the wider health and social care system in reducing the health inequalities that are still faced by people who also have a Learning Disability, and I am actively involved in positive change initiatives both locally and nationally. As a Learning Disability Nurse, I still remain as passionate and committed as I was on my very first day all those years ago and I still thrive on a new challenge. <image:caption>Learning Disability Consultant Nurse, Cornwall I have worked with people with learning disabilities for 22 years and believe passionately in reducing discrimination and inequality. I have worked across a range of settings including forensic / inpatients, primary care liaison and commissioning. I currently work for the adult community learning disability team, serving the population of Cornwall. Starting out as a support worker in London, I then went on to train as a Registered Learning Disability Nurse at Greenwich University, before completing an MSc in Analysis & Intervention in Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities at the Tizard Centre in Kent. I am pleased that improving the lives of people with learning disabilities is a currently a national priority, for example as evidenced in the NHS Long Term Plan, and my background in liaison nursing has given me the firm belief that this objective is the responsibility of everyone, not just specialist learning disability staff. Before working in healthcare, I studied art and drama and worked briefly in the film industry. I have a keen interest in music and play drums in a local band.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Independent Consultant Nurse & Honorary Senior Fellow, Kingston and St Georges, University of London I have worked as a learning disability nurse for over 40 years. Throughout my career I have loved all the many and varied challenges and rewards of my role. I have worked with a wide range of health needs and complexity across inpatient and community care, and been involved in changing and developing services. I have extensive experience of person-centred working with people who have learning disabilities, families, advocates, health professionals and others to improve the quality of health experiences and outcomes. I am part of the team who developed the Health Equalities Framework (HEF) and led on the development and implementation of the Moulster and Griffiths Nursing Model winning the RCN learning disability nursing awards in 2012 and 2016. I’m a great believer in finding person centred solutions that help people have better health and wellbeing. I enjoy working with students and qualified nurses to support professional and personal development. I see mentorship as an important part of my role, seeing my colleagues grow and develop to meet the ever-expanding challenges faced by learning disability nurses. In 2016 I was proud to be awarded an OBE for services to nursing and people with learning disabilities. I feel this award reflected the growing awareness of the value learning disability nurses and reflects the work of so many of my colleagues, reinforcing how proud I am to be a learning disability nurse.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Consultant Nurse- Learning Disabilities North Staffordshire Combined Healthcare Trust. I qualified as a Learning Disability Nurse in 2002 and have absolutely loved the diversity LD nursing offers and the unique opportunity to work with people of all ages and abilities; people who are unwell and people who are developing health independence. I have worked with adults and children, in-patients and community services. for me, learning disability nursing has enabled me to pursue specialist roles within the specialism for example; health promotion, mental health, education, Positive Behaviour Support, Forensic care, and epilepsy. It is an incredibly rewarding career. I commenced my role as a Consultant Nurse in June 2020 and this enables me to spend time in clinical practice working predominantly with Children and young people at risk of family/ placement breakdown and those with complex health needs. My time is divided across education, clinical leadership and research. Projects I have recently been working on include the design of a new, assessment and treatment unit which includes specialist, modern environment and technologies to improve service users care experience, reduce restrictions and support assessment and clinical decision making. I am leading on a variety of other exciting initiatives, all of which place people with learning disabilities, their families and carers at the centre. For me, learning disability nursing was a great career choice, and with all the investment in the profession and a new national plan, it really is very exciting!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Consultant Nurse Epilepsy & Intellectual Disability, Nottingham I qualified in Learning Disability Nursing in 1985 and have since worked in a variety of inpatient and community health services. It was whilst working as a community nurse I became passionate about improving epilepsy treatment and care for people with intellectual disabilities. I forged links with the local Neurology Service and together with a like-minded Consultant Neurologist and Consultant Intellectual Disability Psychiatrist developed an integrated specialist service in Nottingham for adults with intellectual disability, and teenagers in transition. I undertook a Non-Medical Prescribing course in 2004 and completed a Master’s Degree in Epileptology at Kings College, London in 2006. The Service has continued to develop and expand with valuable input from service users and their families. I provide expertise in the diagnosis and management of complex epilepsies and associated health conditions as part of a holistic patient centred service in Nottinghamshire striving to improve health outcomes and quality of life of people with epilepsy and intellectual disability.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Consultant Nurse for people with learning disabilities - Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (BHFT) Hello, I’m Becky. I qualified as a learning disability nurse and social worker in 2000. Since then I have mostly worked in community learning disability teams for people with learning disabilities as a learning disability nurse, but I’ve also spent some time working in child and adolescent mental health services. As part of my career development I undertook a Consultant Trainee Programme where I was able to experience working in a wide range of learning disability, mental health and acute trust services. To expand my knowledge and expertise I have completed an MSc in Mental Health in Learning Disabilities. I found my MSc absolutely fascinating and would recommend further study if you have the opportunity. I have also completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Research and PGCERT in Academic Practice. As well as clinical practice I have worked for the University of Hertfordshire as a Lecturer Practitioner. If I could offer one piece of advice to aspiring learning disability nurses, it would be to take opportunities that come your way, but in doing so ensure that you equip yourself well by listening to, working with and learning from others, particularly people who use the services that you are working in, as everything we do as a learning disability nurse is for the person.</image:caption>

<image:caption>RNLD, DipHE, BSc (Hons), MA Consultant Nurse for people with learning disabilities and autism - Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust Hello, my name is Sue. I have been a Registered Nurse Learning Disabilities (RNLD) for 34 years’ after starting out as a support worker in a day centre. During my career I have worked in a range of different clinical, education and governance roles. Until recently I led on the Green Light Toolkit Quality Improvement Plan within Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust (NSFT) to drive the learning disability and autism agenda forward within mental health services. For this work I was awarded Learning Disability Nurse of the Year in June 2018 at the National Learning Disability and Autism Awards. I am active on social media and as a member of the #keephoLDNon virtual team we supported the learning disability community and nursing students through the pandemic. We made videos and held events to improve people’s wellbeing. I cannot think of a better career! I feel passionately about encouraging people to #ChooseLDNursing as a positive career choice and am leading on a project locally to promoting learning disability nursing. As a group we work within schools, academies and access courses to encourage people to enter the profession which makes a real difference to people’s lives.</image:caption>
